Education

In order to become a certified surgical tech you will need to attend school. Schooling for surgical techs can take anywhere from nine moths to two years. This all depends on whether or not you take the general program of study or choose to specialize in a specific medical or surgical area such as neurosurgery or open heart surgery. If you do choose to specialize you are looking at a program length of approximately two years.

While you are in school you will study a variety of science classes as well as other classes. Some of the science classes that you will study include:

Pharmacology
Physiology
Anatomy

The other requirements include patient ethics and medical terminology. Upon completion of your program you will be required to take a series of exams to gain your certification. Once you have completed these exams and received a passing grade you will be able to go out into the work field and apply for surgical tech positions.

Everest College Salt Lake City, Utah When you enroll in the Surgical Technologist diploma program at the Everest Institute, you will learn the skills to assist with surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Students are trained in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, professional ethics, medical terminology, and will become CPR certified. Prior to graduation, students will get experience in an operating room, working under the supervision of a nurse or operating room technician.
