A surgical technician also known as an operating room technician is responsible for assisting in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Surgical technicians are a vital part to the surgical team. Technicians are also responsible for setting up the operating room before the procedure. This includes setting up instruments being used, sterile and non sterile equipment, and making sure all equipment works properly. They are also responsible for preparing the patient before surgery. This includes any preparation needed to be done before the surgery, moving the patient from the prep room to the operating room, checking the patient’s charts, and taking vitals before the surgery. Once the surgery starts a technician is responsible for passing instruments, and helping the surgeon in whatever way is needed. After the surgery a technician is responsible for transporting the patient to recovery and then restocking the operating room.
