When you enroll in the Surgical Technologist diploma program at the Everest Institute, you will learn the skills to assist with surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel. Students are trained in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, professional ethics, medical terminology, and will become CPR certified. Prior to graduation, students will get experience in an operating room, working under the supervision of a nurse or operating room technician.

Salary Possibilities

The demand for Surgical Tech’s is greater each year and expects to increase 25% by 2018. A Surgical Tech in the Seattle area can expect to make from $17.93 to $23.64 per hour, with higher pay scales for specialized fields. Salary will be on the lower scale as you begin your career, rising as you gain experience. Salary will also be dependent on area and company where employed.

What Duties do Surgical Tech’s Perform?

Prior to surgery a Surgical Tech will prep the patient, set up the operating room, making sure instruments and equipment are properly placed and working properly. During surgery they hold the instruments for the surgeon, keep an eye on the patient’s vital signs, and then help transport the patient to the recovery area. Surgeon’s and Registered Nurses supervise the Surgical Tech in performing their duties.

Study Requirements

Seattle Central Community College offers a 60 credit course (13 related to instruction and 47 in major). Surgical Tech classes start with the fall term only. Work on related instruction can begin any quarter. Area of study will include medical terminology and surgical technology, anatomy and physiology. Students must have completed 80 hours of surgical cases as well. None of which will be paid time but rather an educational experience necessary to obtain your degree.

You must be enrolled before you can apply for financial aid. Seattle Central Community College will work with you to apply for financial aid. Your amount will be determined from several programs which are available and depend on your family’s financial situation and any scholarships you might already possess.
