The healthcare industry will always be looking for fresh new faces to go along with its rapidly improving technology and it’s one of the fastest growing industries in America. One place where the industry is growing the fastest is Southern California – San Diego in particular. Why not have a great paying job that you enjoy and get to live in a warm, sunny location close to beaches, entertainment, and great nightlife?
In San Diego, Surgical Technologists can work in large hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, or even private and individual doctors or dentists offices. You can work for one specific surgeon or many. There are so many opportunities in San Diego that finding the perfect career atmosphere to work in based on your own unique personality is as easy as finding a crowded beach on a Saturday afternoon.
According to the Department of Labor Statistics, the median income for a Surgical Technologist is $39,400 a year, but you may be able to earn as much as $55,000 depending on your education qualifications and on-the-job experience. California in general and southern California more specifically, employs some of the highest paid Surgical Technologists in the nation.
To become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) you must pass the National Certification Exam. This is a multiple choice test that is moderated by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). The certification lasts for 4 years, then you must renew to stay current.

All students planning to attend any kind of post-secondary school should plan to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This will let you know what the government expects you to pay for your own education, and what the government is willing to give you to help you out. This could be in the form of a grant, a loan that could have little to no interest on it while you’re still in school, or federal work-study where you earn a paycheck and possibly even school credit. Any new student should also contact the schools they plan on attending to see what financial aid they may be eligible for through that specific institution.
