New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, is beautiful place to live… And a beautiful place to work, especially if you are interested in the healthcare field. The economy in New Mexico is always on the rise, with budding frontier towns and the bustling capital city of Albuquerque leading the way. Whether you are looking for that fast paced city life or something a bit more quiet and serene, you can find all of it and more in New Mexico.
Just as with most places, surgical technologists are hired in every type of healthcare scene. You can work in a small surgical practice or a large hospital and still have just as many opportunities. In New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment can quickly become the land of opportunity.
New Mexico in general lags slightly behind the national average for salaries for most industries. Healthcare careers, and surgical technologist careers more specifically, are no exception to that. The national average for surgical technologist salaries is about $41,000 a year, whereas the average salary in New Mexico is about $34,000. However, a lower cost of living plays a big part in that and salary should not be the only factor considered when deciding to study as a surgical technologist in New Mexico.
There are no city, county, or state specific requirements for education to become a surgical technologist in the state of New Mexico. However, to start working as a surgical technologist in the US, you must be able to pass the National Certification Exam that is moderated by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA). Once you pass this test you will be a Certified Surgical Technologist, and your certification will last four years. Having the right education from a respected and accredited institution will make passing this test, as well as finding a great job, much easier.
