Responsibilities of a Surgical Technician

Surgical Techs have a great deal of responsibility. There are many things that they have to be knowledgeable of. Surgical Techs have to prepare patients for surgery, bring patients into the operation room at the time of the surgery, pass instruments to surgeons during procedures, sterilize equipment, watch and monitor patients vital signs, check equipment to make sure that it is all functioning properly, prepare specimens for laboratories and evaluations, cut sutures, replenish supplies and clean the operating room.

Education

Schooling is absolutely necessary for surgical techs. In most cases schooling can take anywhere from nine months to two years. If you choose to specialize in a specific area such as neurosurgery or open heart surgery then you will be more inclined to be in school for approximately two years. While you are in school you will study a variety of science classes and learn patient ethics and how to care for patients.
