A surgical tech is such an important part to a well organized operation room. Surgical Techs are responsible for pre and post surgical treatments. They prepare the patient before surgery, transport the patient if necessary, sterilize all of the instruments and all of the tools for the surgery, hand the tools to the surgeon during the surgery, cut the sutures, clean the operating room, check and monitor the patients vital signs both before and after the surgery, assist the anesthesiologist and assist the nurses.

Education

Surgical techs can attend school anywhere from 9 months to 2 years. Most times it is closer to 9 months. If you do decide however to go to school for a specialized surgical tech concentration such as open heart surgery or neurosurgery then you are looking more at the two year plan. While you are in school you can expect to study a great deal of science. Some of the science classes that you will take include:

The average salary for surgical techs in the state of Maryland is approximately $47,610 – much higher than the national average. There is a lot of money to be made in the surgical tech field.
