Los Angeles, being the second largest city in the US, has a lot of people. Those people need medical care, and some are going to need surgery. Some surgeries may be a matter of life and death, and others may be elective surgeries, but surgical technologists are still very much needed as a vital part of the operating room staff, no matter the reason. Los Angeles is a big place with a lot of opportunities for a surgical technologist.
Surgical technologists in Los Angeles can work in any number of work environments, from some of the biggest hospitals on the cutting-edge of technology, to a family practice in the suburbs. They could even work in dentists’ offices or a plastic surgery firm. There is no shortage of need for surgical technologists in Los Angeles.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, those surgical technologists working in southern California, or Los Angeles more specifically, tend to make a little more than the national average for this occupation. The average annual income for a surgical technician there is just over $44,000, and that salary can jump to over $58,000 depending on your on-the-job experience and overall education. Because of the big boom in this industry, annual salaries are expected to rise slightly over the next decade.
There is no hard and fast rule dictating how much education a surgical technologist must have to make it in the healthcare scene. However, enough education is needed to be able to pass the National Certification Exam to become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). A good school will have you trained well enough to pass this test, put on by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), when you graduate from their program. The certification lasts for four years, and you may need to take short classes or attend a seminar to brush up on what you need to know for this test when it’s time to take it again.
