If you are considering a career in health care take a look at becoming a surgical technician. There is a very good chance that you will have a job waiting for you right after you receive your diploma. A strong background in science and math are needed and you may need to take an entry level math course as a prerequisite. Most employers prefer to hire certified technician.
A strong mind and stomach are helpful as you will be dealing with the sight of blood and organs. Surgical technicians also need to stand for long periods of time so it helps to be in good physical condition. You will be making sure the correct tools and equipment are available to the surgeon during surgery. A 40 hour work week is typical, however, you may be expected to work on call and some weekends.
Due to the high demand for surgical tech’s in Arizona the average pay is very good, starting at $30,000 per year and rising considerably with years of experience. Most employers have health benefits and some offer tuition reimbursement. With further education and specialization surgical technicians and really increase their earning potential.
There are two year degree programs for surgical tech’s with no experience in the medical field needed. Also available is a one year diploma for those already in the medical field. Students should check that the school has accreditation review committee for surgical technology. This is required to be able to sit the certification exam. Generally the learning schedule is 8 hour days, 2 to 5 day per week. The course work typically includes:
Microbiology
Surgical procedures
Medical terminology
Physiology
Some of the coursework may be available to you online. This can be beneficial to those with busy schedules or who live far from campus.
