Hello everyone,
I have been a CST for 17 years now, and a clinical instructor for eight years, as well as a surgical tech college professor for about four years.
I must say, the above description of the field is very accurate. Our line of work demands a lot of stamina, alertness for long period of times, quick mind to be able to make accurate decisions on your feet, and a cool head to work focused under pressure, etc, etc. Not only that, a surgical technologist must be well verse in pre, intra, and post operative duties as well as some aspects surrounding anesthesia issues, i.e., strong knowledge of peri operative patient care, instrumentation and surgical equipment, aseptic techniques and principles, anatomy, surgical procedures, surgical medication, circulating role, anesthesia related issues.
For those interested in becoming surgical technologists you can search for school programs at www.caahep.org. If you live in NJ I could recommend excellent programs at Dover Business College, Bergen Community College or Somerset Community College. If you live in NYC, Kingsborough Community College - CUNY has an excellent program. For the Westchester area look at Westchester Community College.
Best of luck

I am a current ST student, and the all around curriculum is very extensive for a two year program. However, the job description given above is exactally as it will be for me when I graduate. I'm glad to hear that others have the same enthusiasm about the position as I do. I cannot wait to be in "the trenches", so to speak!

i really liked this cause it really gives good information straight-forward and to the point, causes you to really evaluate you,re thoughts to examine you,re sefl to see if you would really be cut out to do the job and the task that is at hand, cause it is critical and most crucial at the same time. I,m quite sure its nothing like you see on t.v as most people think. (grays anatomy)
